2007-14 Cruising Tennessee River, Alabama & Tennessee
Ahoy All,
This week found us boogying up the Tennessee River, making stops at marinas in Florence, Decatur, and Scottsboro, Alabama; and Harrison, Ten Mile, and Lenoir City, Tennessee. And we anchored out near Guntersville and Nickajack Dams. We celebrated our anniversary in a nice little cove, dangling our feet in the cool water from the swim step, shelling and eating peanuts, watching the fireflies, and enjoying a beautiful sunset. It was a very memorable evening.
Our only side trip this week was up the Hiwassee River. Hiwassee Island sits at the mouth of the river. The island and surrounding area are part of the Tennessee Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is a stopping place for migrating waterfowl and a nesting place for many birds. Sandhill cranes, ducks, geese, swans, osprey, bald and golden eagles use the refuge. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves snapping photo after photo. It was a rare opportunity to get some good close-up shots of osprey.
One evening while we were enjoying dinner at the Lighthouse Restaurant overlooking Watts Bar Lake, we snapped photos of the beautiful sunset--hence the photo of the week.

It kind of symbolizes the sun
setting on our cruise. We thoroughly enjoyed our time on the river. Taking time
away from TV, newspapers, and the realities of today's news, was like a breath
of fresh air. In fact, we have a renewed appreciation for fresh air, trees,
birds and other animals, and the overall beauty of nature on the water.
On the other hand, we are very glad to be back in our fifth wheel (home)--Barb has a new appreciation for a full size refrigerator, double sinks, unlimited hot water, and a king-size bed. Dave loves having his computer desk back and his own shower. But, most of all we are enjoying having a comfortable place to sit and relax. There’s nothing like a vacation from what you normally have to appreciate coming home.
To summarize our trip--we enjoyed seeing turtles, raccoons, deer, coyotes, a mink, eagles, herons, and numerous other kinds of birds. And, the scenic beauty of the Tennessee River is amazing. We were on the river for 1 month and 1 day, covered nearly 1100 miles, snapped over 4000 photos, traveled in 3 states, and met countless numbers of genuinely nice friendly people. Believe us, southern hospitality is alive and well.
Until next time,
Dave and Barb
