2015-6 Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, Ft. Bragg, California
Hello All,
Visiting the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens had been a priority since our arrival in Fort Bragg, CA, four days earlier. But, the coastal weather had been just too beautiful to take it in. We have learned over the years that photographing flowers on a bright sunshine day can be difficult—especially when dealing with red and purple flowers. There was a low overcast sky on our final day in the area that wasn’t forecast to burn off till late afternoon—perfect! We immediately headed for the botanical gardens.
Over 1,000 rhododendron bushes can be seen blooming throughout the gardens in the springtime. We love bright colors and when Mother Nature mixes them together we find it simply awesome. Since the rhododendrons were so prolific in the gardens we decided to feature them alone in this write-up. Hope you don’t mind.
We took our time working our way along the various paths within the gardens. In our eyes it was truly beautiful.

We loved how the petals varied in color on the same bush. One might be nearly white while another light pink.
Some of the petals have bright red dots on them. It is a truly interesting flower.
With so many different colors to choose from it is a popular option for the home gardener. Smaller plants were available for purchase.
Azaleas make up two subgenera of rhododendron. They are distinguished from "true" rhododendrons by having only five anthers per flower.
Some of the best known and popular species of rhododendron are noted for their many clusters of large flowers.
We learned that rhododendrons may be either evergreen or deciduous.
With the sun starting to burn through the overcast we called it a day. Since we had snapped something over a thousand photos we were happy with our day of leisurely relaxing in the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens. It is a destination that we highly recommend for flower lovers.
In our next write-up we will feature the other flowers also within the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens. It is truly a lovely place. Hope you will join us for that walk in the garden.
Until next time,
