Pictures of the Week 2009-12
Hello All,
December found us packing our little travel trailer and hooking it to our truck in anticipation of spending the upcoming holidays with friends in Gulf Shores, AL. After a day’s road trip from our home in northern Alabama we parked our rig in Gulf State Park on the Gulf of Mexico in southern Alabama.
The seashores are beautiful in this part of our country--lots of sea birds, white sand beaches, spring-fed lakes, marshes, and lagoons surrounded by sea grasses, live oak trees and pine forests. The sunsets aren’t bad either. If you want to take a walk, ride a bike or just kick back and relax this is an excellent place to do it.

A group of these Eastern
Bluebirds greeted us every morning when we came out of the trailer. They are
such a lovely little bird. We have bluebird houses on the fence in the backyard
at home and love watching them raise their young.
Here are a few photos to give
you an overview of what the Gulf coast area looks like. If you like the beach
and the sun and water this is a lovely area to spend some time.
Note the dead trees in the
following photo. This is the result of hurricane Ivan that went through the
area in 2004. Hurricane season in the United States is from June 1st
through November. Peak season is the months of August and September. We don’t
let hurricanes worry us. Unlike tornados, there are days of advanced warnings
when a hurricane is approaching an area--plenty of time to pack up and
evacuate. Only a fool would try to ride out such an awesome impact of Mother Nature!!
On one of our outings we came
across this Great Blue Heron. While he kept a watchful eye on us he wasn’t the
least bit intimidated by our presence. We snapped photos of him for a good half
hour. He was still there when we finally got bored and moved on.
If seafood is your fancy there
are a lot of fine eating establishments to satisfy your palate. We particularly
liked the 20 jumbo shrimp you could get for $10 at Mikee’s Cafe. Two sane
people could make a meal out of one order--but who said we were sane!!
Orange Beach and Gulf Shores are the two closest towns to the campground. Here are a couple of shots taken around Orange Beach.

On one of our drives we came across this
establishment for rent. Guess it would be a real “out of this world”
experience!
Evenings were spent relaxing
with friends over a glass of wine and watching the sunset.
We will continue with our
adventures on the Gulf Coast in our next write-up.
Until next time,
