Pictures of the Week 2008-10
Hello All,
Upon arriving back in Florida from our cruise we saw that the “Daytona Bike Week 2008” was getting ready to kick off. A few years ago we spent a week in South Dakota while the “Sturgis Motorcycle Rally” was taking place. To say it was a “hoot” would be an understatement---it was a blast!! So, we decided to do a road trip to Daytona.
Approximately 500,000 people make their way to this annual 10-day event. Bikers attend from almost every state, and as far away as Canada. We even saw a bike with an Alaska license plate on it! The festivities include motorcycle racing, concerts, parties, and street festivals. And, there are loads of vendors selling anything and everything to do with motorcycle riding. The event is usually held on the first full week of March and contends with Sturgis as the most popular motorcycle rally in the United States. Bike Week has been a tradition in Daytona since January 24, 1937.
We spent about five hours checking out the action and taking photos. The main street of town was restricted to only motorcycles--no automobiles were allowed. Once we figured this out we found a spot on a corner and let the bikes come to us. Bike after bike after bike paraded up and down the street.

It was also a great place to
people watch as there was an assortment of characters, both young and old.
The open air sidewalk bars
were busy and had live bands playing.
Everyone was happy and
friendly and genuinely having a good time. Just to make sure, there was a heavy
security and police presence.
Best of all was the amazing
number of different types of bikes. Of
course there were lots of Harley-Davidsons.
Along with loads of crotch
rockets.
Lots and lots of trikes.
And, some of the new dual
front wheel trikes.
There were many fancy paint jobs.
And really neat custom bikes.
We had a fun day. It is hard
to compare Daytona Bike Week to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Sturgis was neat because the rally was the
only thing going on in the little town.
To see other attractions you had to ride to surrounding towns. Daytona is a large city with many other
activities besides the rally. For
example the beautiful beach. It just
didn’t seem to have the same “biker” atmosphere as Sturgis. However, it is a fantastic March travel
destination. You’ll love the nice warm
weather!!
