2007-21 Museum of Science & Energy, Oak Ridge, Tennessee
Hello All,
It has been a wonderful fun week. On Wednesday morning our 15-year old granddaughter Heather from Anchorage, AK, arrived. She will spend the next two weeks traveling with us. We didn’t let any grass grow under our feet, as we hit the road the day she arrived.
Our first adventure was to Bald River Falls and then to a smaller falls on the Tellico River. The Tellico Falls is only about 20 feet high with a nice pool of water below it. There was a bus load of young folks swimming and having fun there. They would jump in the water above the falls and let the current take them down stream and over the falls!! It was fascinating to watch. We continued our drive over the Cherohala Skyway and then down the Tail of the Dragon where we encountered a “cloud burst!” It was raining so hard that the wipers on full speed could not handle it. We were shooting video out the sunroof of the truck going down the dragon when it broke loose. That came to a screeching halt! We felt sorry for the motorcycle riders and a group of sports cars with their tops down that were also caught in the downpour.
The American Museum of Science & Energy in Oak Ridge, TN, was our next destination. We had a lot of fun there. They have a movie that does a good job of explaining why the “secret city” of Oak Ridge was built during the 2nd World War and the importance it played in the development of the atomic bomb. Unfortunately, we are afraid that some of the nuclear radiation escaped and hit Dave during our visit--hence the picture of the week.

One evening we stopped by the
neighbors’ house in the campground to video tape the “9 o’clock” flower. We set
the camera up on the tripod and zeroed in on a bud. Our plan was to turn the
camera on when the buds started to open. Wouldn’t you know it, the bud we were
zeroed in on was the first to open and before we could get the camera turned on
we had missed the shot! After scrambling around we did get a few shots of other
flowers opening. It was fascinating to watch. They started blooming about 8:50
pm and were done about 9:10 pm.
Rock City in Chattanooga, TN, was our next destination. We had fun squeezing through the rocks and snapping lots of photos. More flowers were in bloom since our last visit. We then drove to the Ocoee River and watched the white water rafters. It looks like a rafting trip down the river is in Heather’s near future.
Until next time,
