Pictures of the Week 2008-18
Hello All,
Once the wind settled down we hooked up the rig and departed Albuquerque. We followed I-40 westbound until Gallup, NM, where we parked for a few days of sightseeing.
After a good night's rest we were off and running. Our first destination was the Petrified Forest National Park which is located in the Painted Desert in northeastern Arizona. We entered through the north gate and spent the entire day traveling the 28-mile road to the south gate. We stopped and explored all 22 points of interest along the road and hiked a number of trails. The first 7 miles of the road offered some great vistas of the Painted Desert.

Further down the main road we
came upon a 3-mile loop drive into the Blue Mesa area of the park. It provided great views of the badlands. The layered blues, purples, and grays are
created by iron, carbon, manganese, and other minerals.
We then hiked the trail down
into the badlands. It was awesome!! The landscaped was like no other we have
seen. It was like we were on another
planet. Some of the ravines were ladened
with petrified logs.
After spending about an hour
trekking around in the badlands we had to climb back to the top. It was great exercise!!
Another trail we walked was
into the Crystal Forest. This area
probably has the largest concentration of petrified wood in the park. We were surprised to learn that petrified
wood can be found in all fifty states.
However, the Petrified Forest National Park boasts some of the most
colorful and abundant petrified wood in the world.
It was a great day and for
sure a place to add to your list of places to visit. Our next venture was to Canyon de Chelly
National Monument in northeast Arizona--but more on that later.
Until next time,
