Pictures of the Week 2009-8
Hello
All,
In continuing our trek around the Green Mountain State our next venture took us to the capitol of Montpelier. It is such a beautiful little town with a population of slightly over eight thousand folks. And, being there in the fall was extra special. Trees were changing color; some were losing their leaves; you could feel the winter season rapidly approaching. Montpelier became the Capitol of Vermont in 1808 when the first State House was built. A new State House was built in 1838 and then destroyed by fire in 1857. The current State House, in the photo below, was completed in 1859.

Our
next stop was the 2,400 acre Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, VT. This beautifully
appointed lodge resort is located high in the mountains and surrounded by
numerous cross country ski trails. The von Trapp family first started welcoming
guests to their 27-room lodge in the summer of 1950. Thirty-three years later the family opened
its doors to a new 93-room resort with the same country charm as the original
lodge. The Lodge continues to be owned and operated by the family, and they
were the inspiration for the classic musical and movie “The Sound of
Music.” In 1959 the play opened on Broadway.
Because it was so popular, in 1965 Hollywood made the story into a movie with
Julie Andrews playing Maria and Christopher Plummer as Baron von Trapp. It was
named Best Picture of the Year. While having lunch it was a special treat to
see a senior von Trapp having lunch at the table next to us.
Driving
the roads around Vermont is truly lovely. You never know what you will come
across. It might be a stand selling maple syrup, a covered bridge, a country
church, or a waterfall. Throw in the fall colors and it is very relaxing for
the soul.
This is Moss Glen Falls.

Swan
Gourds were being offered at a farmer’s market along the road. We stopped there
for a picnic lunch beside the creek running behind the market.
We enjoyed the beauty
of this lovely home in the village of Woodstock.
Fall
colors were really starting to pop out throughout the countryside.
Taftsville Covered
Bridge made for a beautiful country setting.
And
finally, we couldn’t resist the dewdrops enhancing these lovely flowers in Barb’s
daughter’s garden on a beautiful crisp fall morning.
We
thoroughly enjoyed our 5-day stay in Vermont. It is always enjoyable visiting
with family. But, it was time to go. So
without overstaying our welcome we started our trek back to Alabama. We’ll fill
you in on our trip home in our next write-up.
Until next time,
