2007-31 Whitewater Falls, North Carolina
Hello All,
Throughout the summer we have watched a major facility being built here on Tellico Lake. We have recently learned that it is the new plant for Christensen Luxury Yachts. They will build mega yachts that are over 100 feet long. The first one, a 155-footer, will be finished in 2010. It has already been sold to Tiger Woods for 28 million dollars!!
A road trip was the primary order of business for us this week. But, rather than fire up the truck we found a 3-day car rental special on the internet. The Friday through Sunday rate was only $15 a day with unlimited mileage. What we saved on putting diesel in the truck more than paid for the car. And, it was a whole lot easier driving and parking on the curvy mountain roads.
Our trip took us into the mountains of Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia, and South Carolina. It is an area that we had not previously toured. We were lured into the area by all the waterfalls advertised. We set up our base in the little town of Dillard, GA and spent the next two days touring the area. The farmlands in the valleys nestled between the mountains were absolutely spectacular, as well as the rivers and waterfalls in the highlands. This area is high on our list of places to visit again.
Cullasaja Falls in North Carolina was the first waterfall we visited. The falls cascade for 250 feet. It is not set up for tourists to visit, as there is just a small narrow pull-off on the side of a steep road for viewing it. Thank goodness we were not in the truck! Bridal Veil Falls, NC, was next on the list. This falls drops 120 feet and you can drive a vehicle under it. We bet it is spectacular when the spring runoff is pumping water over it instead of the late autumn dribble. We also visited Dry Falls, NC. It only drops about 75 feet but was very picturesque.
Whitewater Falls was the main attraction for us. The upper falls, which is in NC, cascades for 411 feet and is the highest falls east of the Mississippi River. The lower falls is in South Carolina and is 400 feet high. If you enjoy waterfalls we highly recommend this area of the country.

Our return trip took us
through the Indian Reservation town of Cherokee, NC. We visited all the shops
in search of walking stick pins for friends of ours--well, maybe not all the
shops, but over 35 of them. From Cherokee we went into the Great Smoky Mountain
National Park. We, along with thousands of other folks, made the side trip into
Kingman’s Dome in the park. The dome is at a higher elevation and the leaves have
started to change color in the area. It was quite lovely and a taste of what is
yet to come.
In our travels we enjoy seeing
how many layers of the Smoky Mountains we can count.
Until next time,
