Pictures of the Week 2008-30
Hello All,
Out of Roseburg we decided to do a side trip to Portland, OR for a few days. We parked the fifth wheel and truck at Dave’s cousin's ranch and rented a car for the venture.

Dave’s daughter Jody and
family were flying back to Alaska from Florida and had a seven-hour layover in
Portland, so it was a great opportunity to see them. Wow, have the grandkids grown!! We had a great time together; just wish the
visit could have been longer. Since Barb
grew up in Portland it was also a great opportunity for us to visit with her
long time friends. We shared several meals with them and did a lot of catching
up.
We had a free day that was forecasted to be in the upper 90’s, so we thought a good way to beat the heat would be to take a ride up over Mt. Hood. The drive into the Recreation Area was wonderful. Picture this--tall evergreen trees, a bright blue sky, a massive mountain, and rhododendrons in bloom. It doesn’t get much better!

Well, good ole Mother Nature tricked us. When we
arrived at Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood our car thermometer read 98 degrees.
Groups of people were skiing in shorts and T-shirts. It was quite a sight. This
is one of the only year round skiing areas in the U.S. But, we didn’t bring any
skis with us, so we decided to move on.
Our route took us down through the beautiful
Hood River Valley. This is a very scenic
area with evergreens and apple orchards.
Mt. Hood looms to the east and Mt. Adams in the state of Washington to
the west. It is a lovely peaceful drive.
Upon reaching the Columbia
River we turned west following the historic Columbia River Highway back to
Portland. This is another one of the
many scenic routes in Oregon. The drive
goes through the Columbia River Gorge where there are numerous waterfalls
spilling from the crest. Probably the
most famous is Multnomah Falls. The falls drops in two major steps, split into
an upper falls of 542 feet and a lower falls of 69 feet. The total height of the waterfall is conventionally
given as 620 feet.
On our return trip to Roseburg
we stopped at one of the many rest areas to stretch our legs. They had the most unusual rose bushes
there. The bushes had multi-colored
flowers on them that fascinated us. So
we spent the next half hour taking photos of them. As we’ve said before it doesn’t take much to
excite us.
Arriving back in Roseburg the horses on the
ranch were jumping with joy to see us--NOT!!
About the only time they get excited is if you walk up to the fence with
an apple!!
After a few more days of great
meals and domino games we bid farewell to our family members in the
Roseburg/Sutherlin area. Departing to
the east on US 138 we followed it up over the Cascade Mountain Range till we intercepted
US 97 where we turned north. At LaPine
we parked the fifth wheel for a week’s visit with Barb’s sister Anita and
husband Bob.
