2007-16 Telico Lake Beggars, Tennessee
Hello All,
With the arrival of the summer boating season our home port marina restaurant opened. It is handy to be able to get a meal right on the dock near where our boat is moored. However, it has come with a price!! Shortly after they opened, beggars started hanging around. Marina management hasn't done much to deter them. It has gotten to the point where they are everywhere. You can't go to the restaurant without them approaching you looking for a handout. We have been shocked and astounded--hence the picture of the week.

Our friends Tom and Helen
arrived in their motorhome this week. We have had a great time hanging out with
them. We went on a boat ride and have taken trips to Bald River Falls,
Cherohala Skyway, Deal's Gap, and the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest. Veterans of
Foreign Wars asked the government to set aside a fitting stand of trees to
serve as a living memorial to Joyce Kilmer, who was killed in action during
World War I. Although Kilmer was both a soldier and poet, he is most remembered
for his poetry about common beautiful things in nature. Kilmer's best known
poem is "Trees." We walked the trails in the memorial forest snapping
photos of the towering trees, some as old as 450 years.
Tom wanted to drive "The Dragon." He was quite impressed with the 318 curves in 11 miles. During the drive there was a steady stream of motorcycles passing us--Honda Goldwings, Harleys, and numerous crotch rockets!! When we arrived at Deal's Gap there must have been 200 motorcycles parked out front, with a constant stream coming in and leaving the area. We had to park across the street and wait for an opening to cross. It seems that the "Honda Hoot" was taking place in East Tennessee this week. The Hoot is a major motorcycle rally where riders from across the country descend upon Knoxville for four days of fun. Even Alaska and Hawaii had riders participating in the festivities.
Until next time,
