Pictures of the Week 2008-27
Hello All,
Once we had our chores done we had a couple of days left on our reservations at the RV Park in Torrey. One of the days we went back into Capitol Reef Park. Our plan was to video driving the winding road up into Capitol Gorge. The narrow road with sheer cliffs on both sides is amazing. We have a collection of such videos of winding roads throughout our travels. Don’t have a clue what we will do with them. But, someday we will think of something.
At the end of the road we parked the truck to check the video out. While parked a Chukar came walking down the road. The first time we had ever seen a Chukar was in the same location earlier in the week with our friends from St. George. So we grabbed the cameras and started snapping photos. They have very distinct markings. They also have an amazing call. We thought they were pretty neat.

Our other trip took us to Calf
Creek State Park. Some friends of ours
had recommended a hike there into a waterfall.
It was hot when we arrived and Dave’s stomach had been a bit upset. So we decided we couldn’t handle the six-mile
roundtrip hike in the heat.
We had passed a trailhead earlier on the drive to Calf Creek. It was at a higher elevation and ended at Chriss Lake, a distance of 1.3 miles. It was cooler at the higher altitude so we opted to do that hike. We donned our hiking shoes and grabbed a bottle of water and set out. The trail went through alpine meadows, crossing a small stream several times, and then into the aspen forest. We can do a three mile hike in less than an hour.

And then the trail began to
get steep steep steep!! After an hour we
knew we had to be getting close so we forged on continuing up up up!! At the end of two hours we knew something
wasn’t right. But, stubbornness wouldn’t
let us quit. Dave’s stomach started
acting up again. Since we were around
10,000 feet one thought was the altitude was effecting him. But, we had been hiking at altitude many
times on this trip. He would go up the
trail 50 feet and then rest. Finally,
after two and a half hours we reached our goal.
The lake was less than impressive, but at least we made it. We were so
high that the aspen hadn’t even started to leaf out. In twenty-twenty hindsight it wasn’t one of
the smartest things we have done!!
You would have thought the trip back to the
truck would have been easier. But, due
to the steep trail with jagged rocks and fallen trees to climb over (or under)
it took us exactly two and a half hours to reach the truck from the top. We were exhausted!!!
A recheck of the sign at the
trailhead shed some light on our dilemma.
It was a four point six mile roundtrip hike!! We think where we got
confused was a sign on the highway that indicated Chriss Lake Trail 1.3. What that meant was the trailhead was 1.3
miles down the road. It is amazing the
trouble we can get into by assuming!
After a much needed nights rest we packed up and departed Torrey to the west following highway 24 till it intercepted I-70. Continuing westbound we turned south on I-15. We parked the rig in Cedar City for two days with plans of visiting Cedar Breaks National Monument the next day (our wedding anniversary).
To make a long story short at 3 am Dave was in the emergency room at the hospital. He was diagnosed with an unknown virus that would have to run its course. They sent us home with all types of drugs to treat the symptoms. Our two-day stay turned into four days, and then six. But, Dave was not improving. Back to emergency where they also diagnosed a severe kidney infection! Then they put him on antibiotics. Our stay was a total of ten days!! Finally, the drugs started taking hold and we could see daily improvement.
With Dave too weak to drive, Barb drove us up into Cedar Breaks where we snapped a few photos. It was nice but didn’t hold a candle to Bryce Canyon National Park. If you want to see hoodoos we would recommend Bryce Canyon hands down.

On another day Barb drove us to Kolob Canyons in
Zion National Park. It is a short
distance south of Cedar City with the entrance right off of I-15. There is a
15-mile scenic drive that is lovely. We thoroughly enjoyed our short stay, and
yes, we took photos.
We are pleased to report that
Dave is on the mend and getting stronger every day.
Until next time,
