Pictures of the Week 2009-14
Hello All,
After days of stormy weather the sky started clearing and we welcomed the warm rays of the sun. Having been cooped up in our little camp trailer for so long we were anxious to get out and do some exploring. We decided to make Santa Rosa Island in the Gulf Islands National Seashore as our target destination. The island is southeast of Pensacola, FL.
The road on the island had been closed for many days following the storm. Once we arrived it was easy to see why. The pounding waves had washed the sand across the road. It had to be plowed as if it was up north being cleared of snow. But at least it wasn’t sub-zero temperatures!! And, yes, the sand in this area is every bit as white as freshly fallen snow.

New Years day found us at the
Flora-Bama watering hole and oyster bar for the annual polar bear dip. It is an
unusual establishment in that it is located on the state line. Half is in
Florida and the other half is in Alabama--hence the name.
Trust us when we say we were not participants in the polar bear dip! We were there to shoot photos of the party crowd and they did not disappoint us. Lots of them were really having a lot of good family fun. And, the costume choices were as varied as Halloween.

At high noon the horn blew and they all raced
for the water. Some raced back OUT about as fast as they raced in! Others
lingered in the moment. The entire event was enjoyed by eager participants and
enthusiastic spectators.
This is the last Pictures of the
Week for our 2009 travels. It was a fun and productive year wherein we
accomplished many “house projects” and only took a limited number of trips.
While we love our house in Alabama we find the chores associated with being a property owner a bit too restrictive for our lifestyle. We would like to be able to travel when the mood hits us on a moment’s notice. You can’t do that when you have the responsibility of lawn maintenance, watering, weeding, and trimming bushes and flowers, etc. However, we like the idea of having a “home base” with established doctors and dentists, etc. Guess you could say we want our cake and eat it too!!
After a lot of soul searching we have determined that what would best suit our lifestyle would be a townhouse or condo-type setting--someplace where we could leave when the whim hits us, but still have the advantages of a home base.
We have no immediate plans but somewhere down the road we will probably make that happen. Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Montana, Idaho, and Oregon are all under consideration.
Until next time,
Dave & Barb
