2007-27 State Fair, Nashville, Tennessee
Hello All,
This week started out with a bang--no make that a Boom!! We, along with over 360,000 other folks, attended the City of Knoxville’s annual “Boom Day” celebration. This was the 20th anniversary of the show. They hype this one-day event as the largest Labor Day fireworks show in the United States. Well, as far as we know there aren’t any other Labor Day fireworks shows in the U.S. of A!!
With that said, we must say this fireworks show was absolutely awesome!! You know how most fireworks shows build to the grand finale. This show started with the grand finale and it continued without a stop for 25 minutes!! We’ll say it again, it was AWESOME!! They had over 90 miles of wire laid to a central control point for setting off the fireworks. The cost of shooting off this many fireworks must be astronomical.
Our next destination this week was Nashville, where we visited the Tennessee State Fair. We thoroughly enjoyed the photographic, agricultural, and livestock exhibits. Seeing the animals is always a favorite for us. There were the usual prize pigs, cows, goats, mules, and rabbits.
We found the agricultural exhibits to be fantastic and snapped lots of photos. One of the prize exhibits was a 213-pound watermelon!! And get this, it took second place, as it was beat out by a 214-pounder!!
Would you believe we saw pumpkins that were over 1,000 pounds!! That’s not a typo! We said over 1,000 pounds!! The pumpkins were huge--hence the photo of the week.

When the growers bring them
from the fields to the fair one pumpkin will fill the bed of a pickup truck!
Can you imagine how many pies could be made from one of these guys!
