Pictures of the Week 2008-12
Hello All,
Our final destination in Florida this season was Butterfly World in Coconut Creek. Butterfly World is the first park of its kind in the Western Hemisphere and the largest butterfly park in the World. Many years of research, combined with careful planning and control have created the right conditions for thousands of butterflies to fly, court, feed and bask in the sunlight, as you walk among them in their world. A minimum of 3,000 butterflies are on display at any time, and up to 50 different species.
The following three are a Clipper, Tree Nymph, and Owl Butterfly.

Butterflies come in a vast
range of colors and a variety of sizes.
The average lifespan of a butterfly in an aviary is about fourteen
days. This compares to about seven days
in the wild. However, some species like
the Zebra can live for up to ten months.
The following three are Banded Morpho, Lacewing, and Madiera.
Butterflies and moths are very
similar. However, basic differences do
exist. Butterflies generally rest with
their wings folded, above the body, perpendicular to the ground. Moths usually rest with their wings folded
along their body. Most butterflies have
antennae which are clubbed at the end, whereas the antennae of a moth are
pointed or feathered. Butterflies are
solar-powered day flying creatures.
Although some moths are also daytime flyers, the majority fly at night. Butterfly caterpillars are extremely fussy
about which plants they feed on. Moth
caterpillars will generally eat a variety of plants. These three specimens are a Swallowtail,
Piano Key, and Mechenitis.
Butterfly World has a vast array of tropical
plants from around the world. It was amazing strolling through the
gardens. Many of the plants were new to
us. For example the New Guinea Trumpet Vine.
And they have some of the most
colorful birds in the world flying in their “Jewels of the Sky” aviary. Red-legged Honeycreepers, Yellow-legged
Honeycreepers, Lady Gouldian Finch, Malachite Sunbirds just to name a few.
Without a doubt, Butterfly
World is a photographer's dream. It is
also a wonderful family destination that we would highly recommend.
Until next time,
