2007-23 Gatlinburg, Tennessee
Hello All,
We started our week off by attending car races at a local track. There’s nothing better than good competitive racing. The track is about 15 miles from the campground and is a high bank ¼ mile red clay oval. The evening’s racing was a special memorial event so there was an abundance of race cars. The gates were open at 3pm with racing scheduled to start at 6pm. Would you believe they didn’t get the first race started until 9pm. There were lots of great race cars but the management of the track didn’t have their act together. Shortly before midnight we gave up and went home. The evening really sucked!!
Early the next morning we headed for the Ocoee River. Our granddaughter Heather had a date with a whitewater raft! We had her booked on the upper Ocoee, which has class IV and V rapids. This stretch of the river goes right through where the 1996 Atlanta Olympic white water kayak competitions took place. To say she had a good time would be an understatement!
Our next destination was Gatlinburg, TN. The journey took us through the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. In route we stopped at a river swimming hole we were familiar with. It’s where the younger generation jumped off rocks into the water. Yup, our daredevil granddaughter wanted to try it--FOUR TIMES!!
Gatlinburg was lovely, although the weather has been extremely hot. The heat index this past week has been above 100 degrees daily. We walked the streets and caught the cable car up the mountain to the ski resort of Ober Gatlinburg. It was nice and cool up there, especially near the indoor ice rink. While in Gatlinburg, Heather met a new boy friend. Grandpa thought he was a little rough around the edges although he was big enough to be a football player--hence the picture of the week!!

On Tuesday afternoon we put
Heather on an airplane back to Anchorage. What a pleasure it has been to have
her with us these past two weeks.
Until next time,
